Almost Everybody Loves Nature Photographs

Be it a gallery exhibiting photographs or images in the social media, nature seems the most loved genre of photography. I’ve noticed most of my friends like my nature photographs in comparison to all others I often post at Facebook or Instagram. Nature photographs didn’t invite a question even,

like ‘what you actually want to communicate?’, often asked by more curious viewer. So what is it that makes nature photographs so popular and loved? I try to find out answer by asking friends, strangers and sometimes to myself.

For some it gives feeling of tranquility like meditation and relaxation, others say taking pictures of nature take them closer and enable them to look at details what they couldn’t see otherwise. There are people who think that such images evoke emotions and give sort of connectivity with the grandeur and beauty of nature. It reminds me of what Prabuddha Dasgupta has mentioned in his book ‘Ladakh’. He wrote that only after three visits to Ladakh, he could pick his camera to make pictures because of his hesitation; the canvas of nature is so vast that a camera frame can not capture it in totality. But for people who have never been to Ladakh, his photographs are inspiring and motivating, too.

One more convincing answer is in ‘Nature’, a book by Ralph Waldo Emerson. He wrote that a nobler want of man is served by nature, namely, the love of Beauty. The ancient Greeks called the world, beauty. Such is the constitution of all things, or such the plastic power of the human eye, that the primary forms, as the sky, the mountain, the tree, the animal, gives us a delight in and for themselves; a pleasure arising from outline, color, motion, and grouping. This seems partly owing to the eye itself. The eye is the best of artists.

People take pictures to document, narrate, for the sake of memory or sheer pleasure of sharing it with others. As argument it’s also true that sometimes we find more details in photographs which we would have missed otherwise. Pictures of birds and animals are good examples.
